ACC reprimands Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry

The Atlantic Coast Conference issued a public reprimand of Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry for his actions following Friday night’s game.

Shrewsberry charged after an official following the Fighting Irish’s 72-71 loss at California, upset about a foul call that led to the decisive four-point play with five seconds left for the Golden Bears.

Players and staff members held Shrewsberry back after the final buzzer before he could reach official Adam Flore.

The ACC said Saturday that Shrewsberry’s actions violated the league’s sportsmanship policy.

“Shrewsberry aggressively confronted a member of the officiating crew following the game. The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the on-court play between these institutions.

“The ACC considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.”

Shrewsberry, who declined to speak to the media following the game, released his own statement shortly before the ACC’s announcement.

“I want to apologize for what took place immediately after the Cal game last night,” Shrewsberry said. “My actions were inappropriate and not symbolic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators. I will learn from this lack of judgment and be better in the future. I want to apologize to our team, our University and its leaders, to Coach (Mark) Madsen and his team, and to the ACC, as my actions were unacceptable.”

Notre Dame (10-5, 1-1 ACC) is idle until next Saturday’s home game against Clemson.
