In a recent disclosure on her program, Jenna Bush Hager offered a candid recollection of the dynamic between her husband, Henry Hager, and her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, during their courtship. According to People report, the nascent relationship between the future son-in-law and mother-in-law encountered an initial period of tension, though it ultimately culminated in a harmonious resolution.
Bush Hager, during a segment of Today with Jenna & Friends, reflected on her residency at the White House preceding her marriage. While temporarily dwelling at the executive residence during a promotional tour for her book, she was visited by her then-fiancé. The occasion, however, was marred by a significant misunderstanding that provoked Mrs. Bush’s consternation.

“My mother asserted, in a rather stern tone, ‘Henry, I know what you did,’” Bush Hager recounted to her audience. She elaborated on Henry’s startled reaction, noting, “He was aghast, as my mother is not typically one for severe admonishments.”

The former First Lady proceeded with her accusation, stating, “I know what you did. You took Joseph.” This allegation, referencing a missing figurine from the White House nativity scene, was met with Henry’s bewildered denial. He reportedly avowed, “On my word, I did not take Joseph, I promise you I didn’t,” yet Mrs. Bush remained unconvinced.
Bush Hager characterized the incident as a “false accusation,” which was only resolved when White House staff subsequently located the figurine of Joseph “concealed beneath a bureau.” The nativity set was being packed away, and the disappearance of the pivotal figure had been mistakenly attributed to Henry.
In a related anecdote, CWEB News also highlights that Bush Hager previously revealed her parents preemptively announced her engagement via a press release to news agencies. The couple first learned of their official betrothal from a television broadcast while at the Boston airport.
