A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria early Monday, killing over 2,000 people and injuring thousands more. As rescue efforts continue, officials are updating the death toll.
For hours after the first quake, multiple strong aftershocks were felt across the region, including a severe quake measuring magnitude 7.5.
The Turkish disaster agency has requested assistance from the international community as it conducts search and rescue operations.

A second 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Kahramanmaras province 12 hours later, with its epicentre in the Elbistan district.
According to a Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority official, it was “not an aftershock” and was “independent” of the previous quake.
Turkey is located in one of the most active earthquake zones on the planet. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the disaster on Monday was the worst the country had seen since the Erzincan earthquake in eastern Turkey in 1939, which killed nearly 33,000 people.

However, another deadly earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern region in 1999, killing over 17,000 people.
More than 1,000 people have been confirmed dead in Turkey alone, bringing the total number of deaths in Syria to more than 2,300.
Mr Erdogan tweeted early this morning that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the earthquake-affected areas.
The situation in Syria, according to the opposition’s Syrian Civil Defense, is “disastrous,” with entire buildings collapsing and people trapped beneath the rubble.
Buildings in Damascus shook, and many people fled to the streets in terror.
In Syria and Turkey, over 2,300 people have been confirmed dead.
According to the most recent figures from Turkey’s disaster agency, 1,541 of these are in the country.
Around 430 people have been killed in government-controlled areas of Syria, with another 390 killed in opposition-held areas.
Some experts believe the death toll could reach 10,000 or higher, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he has no idea how high it will rise.
